Synopsis : Views of Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is a comprehensive 194 page illustrated architectural tour of Doylestown Borough, the county seat of historic Bucks County Pennsylvania. It is a collection of detailed pen and ink renderings of 176 structures and maps created by noted illustrator Rob Larsen over a 20-year period from 1995 to 2015. Going far beyond any previous publication on the topic, it is an in-depth visual study of the evolution of the built environment of this community from its humble beginnings as a crossroads village to the period of unprecedented growth at the turn of the 20th century, through the post-Depression decline to the revitalization of the 1990s. Primarily known for its fine examples of Victorian era style homes and public buildings, Doylestown Borough is actually a well-preserved microcosm of American architectural tastes spanning more than 200 years. Those Victorian era styles are well represented here, but so is the indigenous architecture from the earliest days of the village, and the best of the more recent work. Many significant historic structures that for one reason or another, were demolished over the years are also included. The illustrations in this collection present an array of architects and include designs by Henry Mercer, Addison Hutton, Thomas Cernea, A. Oscar Martin, Fred F. Martin, Milton B. Bean, Lynn Taylor and Robert Kear. The pen and ink drawings capture these urban structures in honest depictions that do not dramatize or over-enhance the presentation like many architectural renderings. However the scenes are shown in a manner that often just isn't possible to capture with photography. The unfortunate visual clutter of street signs, utility poles and such are not included. Often trees and shrubbery are eliminated to enable a view of the entirety of a subject. The book is arranged by streets so that it functions as a self-guided walking tour. The buildings are sequenced just as they would be encountered on the street. An accurately scaled, two-page map of the Borough is located in the center spread and it is coded so that each structure can be located on the map.Views of Doylestown is of interest not only to residents and visitors, but to anyone interested in the architecture of the area and the history of an important slice of Americana. While it serves as a rich visual history of Doylestown, this book also provides insight into the style and culture of the area that have been evolving for more than two centuries. It is simply a delight to the read r in its exquisite attention to detail and respect for this beautiful town.
