Rare 1850s Ivorytype Photograph of Thomas Sully's Mrs Harry Ingersoll

Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION: Quite a rare antique photograph. This is an 1850s full plate (8 1/2″ x 6 1/2″) hand painted Ivorytype photograph. The photograph is of an 1841 Thomas Sully painting of Mrs. Harry Ingersoll, who was known as Sarah Emlen Roberts before marriage. This Ivorytype had a handwritten piece of paper with it dating it to 1859. I no longer have the paper but have a pic of it, I guess they took a salt print of the painting and created the ivorytype. I could find no signature on the Ivorytype. When I received the Ivorytype about 65% of the photo was no longer attached to the glass, creating an ugly big air bubble. The thin fragile photo was gently removed from the glass. You can see in photo #2 the the photo has a shiny wax finish. Currently the photo just sits behind the original thick glass.I would guess a professional could heat the wax back up and affix it back to the glass, but it looks great just the way it is. The photo is in a fabulous hand carved period gilded frame. The back opening of the frame is 8 x 10 and photo is 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 so small acid free foam shims were added underneath the backboard so glass photo doesn’t slide around. Antique. Over 160 years old. Rare 1850s Ivorytype. Original very thick glass. The wax that held the ivorytype to the glass no longer bonds it to the glass. If you look at pic #2 you will see a very thin fragile photo that is shiny on the front from wax. Ivorytype in a fabulous period gilded frame. Frame as pictured with some minor losses to wood carving. Frame has newer gold foil finish creating a textured surface. Some losses to gold gilding. Displays beautifully. Very rare hard to find early ivorytype photo. Overall it measures about 14 3/4″ x 12 3/4″. Ivorytype measures 8 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.
