The Nile on eBay Understanding Japanese Buddhist Sculpture through Visual Comparison by Yoshihiro Suzuki, Michael Jamentz A beginner’s guide to appreciating Buddha statues from a whole new perspective. This book is an introductory guide to help you familiarize yourself with Buddhist sculpture, and the basic principal behind the book is understanding Buddhist sculpture through visual comparison. Avoiding explanations of Buddhist iconography, sculptural techniques, and the cultural and historical background of the works, this book aims to help you cultivate the ability to fully observe the expressiveness of Buddhist sculpture. By applying the steps and way of viewing recommended in this book, the impressions you have gained with your own eyes will leave a deeper impression in your mind, allowing you to make new discoveries each time you view a Buddhist statue, and also to deepen your appreciation. Armed with this book, you’ll find yourself consulting only the most basic information required as your own knowledge expands and you are guided to a more profound understanding of the world of Buddhist sculpture. FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Back Cover When we look at a Buddhist statue based on information about types, periods, and creators of the statue, we tend to walk by the statue after scanning the captions and giving only a casual glance at its appearance and how it has been made. Once we confirm the previously received information about the statue, the statue itself immediately begins to fade from our minds. What then would be useful in giving a more lasting appreciation of such works? This book introduces the necessary steps and the manner of viewing needed to build a deeper appreciation. This concept is presented with the goal of cultivating the ability to fully observe the expression of the Buddha image, which is the main road to know the Buddha image well. When I wrote this book, I learned again from my school days that art history is a way to rethink that style theory is a royal road. Buddhist art books always hear the voice that “the commentary is very difficult”. One of the major reasons is that photographs and illustrations showing the contents explained are not posted together. To make it clear, this book includes photos from various angles, avoids difficult kanji idi- oms and aesthetic terms, and uses everyday words as much as possible. In posting the photos, we were able to carry out this project after paying a premium to Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple. I would like to thank you for writing here. My study of Buddha images is centered on Nara’s cultural property sites, so it may be intuitive, a little lingering, and a little peculiar to fieldism, such as having nothing to say at all. However, once again, I’m sorry, but if you try to compare the two Buddha statues, you will experience things that you have never noticed before. This book expects such readers’ reactions. It would be a great joy if the number of Buddhist statue lovers who practiced in this book increased, and the number of people who went to old temples and museums increased.
