The Life of General Ulysses S. Grant John Abbott 1868 — Boston: B. B. Russell These days when a politician is running for president, usually a biography comes out first. The same was true in 1868! General Ulysses S. Grant, war hero and “savior of the Union,” was running for President as a Lincoln Republican. This slickly produced biography, by Maine pastor and historian John S. C. Abbott, skips over Grant’s youthful misadventures, and dives straight into his stubborn Civil War heroics that made him legendary. It is 309 pages of war stories, amplified by beautiful full-page engravings and detailed maps. Through it, readers could learn about the man who now wanted to lead the nation by taking an in-depth (if idealized) view of him as a soldier and military leader. CONDITION VG to VG+ Antiquarian. This is a really excellent book that would be nearly Fine if not for the very faint but persistent dampstain at the top margin. Otherwise it’s in fabulous condition. Brilliantly blindstamped covers with Grant’s signature in gold, lovely spine with intact head/tail. Strong joints. Inside, strong hinges, textblock complete including original endpapers. Textblock is tightly bound with nothing sprung or loose. Pages are bright, and of higher quality than usual for the period — a sign that this book was part of a political strategy. In the end, Grant’s presidency is not remembered kindly. A Reconstruction that was cut off prematurely, leading to nearly a century of Jim Crow laws and segregation; financial crises; and political scandal all sullied Grant’s post-military career. But when this book was published — and eagerly read — it must have seemed like the future was wide open. 309 pp 7 1/2″ x 5 1/4″ VALUATION Valuation statement
