Staffordshire dog figurines are matching pairs of pottery spaniel dogs, standing guard, which were habitually placed on mantelpieces in 19th-century homes. They were produced by many pottery companies located in the County of Staffordshire, England, from 1720 to 1902. The peak of interest and production came towards the end of the 19th century. The earliest date back to the 18th century, though they were incredibly commonplace by the mid to late-1800s. The upper classes and royalty had kept the King Charles Cavalier Spaniels as pets (the Stuart kings, Carles I and Charles II). and you have seen all the portrait and sittings of the royal gentry with these dogs in the paintings. At some point, the potteries started making lesser defined quality figures that sold for less, almost an assembly line type of mass production so that the common working-class folk could enjoy these sweet little dust catchers. These I have on auction were produces by Staffordshire Ware, note the hallmark in third picture. I researched the timeframe, and these dogs were made with a slip (liquid clay poured into the mold, with little defined in the way of a brush stroke, so I’d venture to say they were made in the 40-50’s. The old antique ones were pressed clay, so no big hole in the bottom if a hole at all. The crazing comes either from removal out of the kiln a bit too fast or from aging, it is the glaze that cracks, not the ceramic. If you run your finger over the surface, it is still smooth, just once in awhile you may feel the crack. They stand 31/8 inches high. At any rate, these will be carefully wrapped and placed in a No. 4 priority box for shipping, it has tracking and insurance, so your investment is secure. If you are unhappy with your purchase, it can be returned but you’ll have to pay return postage. I’m sure you’ll be pleased.
