Sabal etonia, aka Scrub Palmetto, is a dwarf Sabal that has a mostly underground trunk. It is possible for the trunk to emerge after very many years, however. This Florida native is quite unusual as far as Sabal palms go because it grows in dry, scrubby, and generally un-palmy conditions, unlike its cousins that prefer wetter environments. It has very costapalmate leaves, like Sabal palmetto, that helps to differentiate it from Sabal minor. Its seeds are also much larger, the largest of any Florida Sabal. The seed stalks are very lax, sometimes lying on the ground, and don’t extend past the leaves (normally). Sabal etonia is quite a cold-hardy palm, with some living as far north as Tennessee. It is probably a zone 8a palm, and may tolerate the occasional quick dip into the single digits, as long as it’s short-lived. It grows fine in hot, dry conditions, after it gets established in the landscape, but will also grow well in good soil and irrigated well.
