This auction is for a nice, seed-grown Variegated C livia miniata . Each leaf will have a slightly different pattern of bold variegation than the previous one on this one-of-a-kind plant. This should become a stunning show plant when it matures. Seed-grown Clivias with good variegation are rarely offered, for reasons i’ll explain in a moment. The plant is a bit under 2 years old. Its longest leaf is 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. Based on the parents, i believe the leaves will grow to about 12 inches long and 3 inches wide when the plant is mature, which is more compact than usual. Most of the seedlings from variegated Clivias are unfortunately green or have poor variegation, and only a small percentage have good variegation. I’ve had to grow hundreds of seedlings to get a few nice ones! The variegation pattern on this one will likely drift over time, but it should keep the general “bacon-like” appearance of thicker bands mixed with pinstripes. The new growth will line up into a neat row instead of scattered if you rotate the plant 180 degrees each week (which i haven’t always done). Since it has less chlorophyll, it grows slower than usual, and could take 4 or 5 years to flower. It will have orange & yellow blooms like the photo below. Both the flower stem and berries will be variegated! If you pollinate it with a regular Clivia, the seedlings should have shorter leaves, and some of them will be variegated. What the flowers will look like It’s easy to grow when given the right conditions. Clivias are happiest in mild temperatures with cool nights. It might not thrive in consistently hot climates with nights that are warm (over 65°F / 18°C), but it grows fine indoors. Give it a chunky soil mix that’s kept evenly moistly. A typical mix is equal parts of small orchid bark or coco chips, potting soil, and perlite or pumice. Bright shade or weak sun is best. Strong sunlight may burn the leaves. When it nears flowering size, you can encourage blooming by exposing it to temperatures below 60°F (15°C) for about half the day for 1-2 months in autumn. Just don’t let it freeze. Over about 40% humidity is best. The leaves have blemishes from growing outdoors. It will be shipped in its pot, not bare-rooted. I usually ship on Saturdays & Mondays (Fedex is Monday & Tuesday). If you want shipping delayed up to 2 weeks, wait to pay please. January 4th is my next shipping day. Weather notice: Delivery to areas below 36 degrees is not recommended and will be done at the buyer’s risk.
