T his roofing hatchet measures 17″ long with a 3 1/2″ edge. Marked “C. F. DOWSE,” almost certainly for Charles F. Dowse, one of the partners in Bigelow & Dowse, a Boston hardware dealer in business for almost a century, but this is the only piece of evidence I’ve found that Dowse made his own tools.
