Power Supply Capacitors and Relays to Repair / Refurbish CARVER A-400X

Circuits and Concepts is now offering a replacement Power Supply capaci tor and relay kit to repair or refurbish classic CARVER model A-400X Amplifiers . These are pin-for-pin replacements for the electrolytic caps and relays on the power supply board of the amplifier. Electrolytic capacitors, especially those made in the 1980’s, age poorly. They often fail as open circuits, where they lose capacitance which can cause hum, loss of clarity and “punch,” and add distortion. They can also become “leaky” and fail as short circuits. This type of failure can cause pops, hum, distortion and power supply failures, or can kill the audio signal entirely. “Re-capping” an amplifier is commonly done for the following reasons: To repair an existing problem or failure in an amplifier. To restore or upgrade the audio quality of an amplifier. To reduce the possibility of future capacitor failures and improve the reliability of the amplifier. The relay contacts erode over time and use. This can cause scratchy signals, intermittent outputs or complete loss of output on one or both channels. The kit contains 4 replacement electrolytic capacitors to replace the large, cylindrical power supply filter capacitors and 2 replacement speaker protection relays. The parts are brand new and meet or exceed the specifications of the original parts. To assure highest reliability, the capacitors in the kit are from a premier manufacturer with a high established component lifetime. The kit includes: Replacements for C505/6, the two 35 V, 6,800 uF electrolytic capacitors on the power supply board. Replacements are 6,800 uF, 50 V. Replacements for C501/2, the two 100 V, 10,000 uF electrolytic capacitors on the power supply board. Replacements are 10,000 uF, 100V. Replacements for RY301/2 the two speaker protection relays on the power supply board. Replacement relays have two sets of contacts, each rated at 10 A for a total of 20 A current capacity per relay. The listing is for a parts kit only, not the complete amplifier. Whether you are repairing an amplifier for a specific problem, or doing a general update and refurb, this parts kit is ideal for getting that prized amp in shape for the next decade or two of service! The parts can be replaced by a person with limited soldering skills. A soldering iron, solder wick and solder are needed to replace the parts. Use standard safety precautions (wear safety glasses, unplug the unit before soldering, good ventilation, etc) when working on your gear. When you’re done soldering, always wash your hands, because solder contains lead. Please note that replacing components will fix the receiver only if those components was the problem to start with! Warning! Be sure to discharge the 4 power supply capacitors on the amp before working on it. This series of amplifiers does not auto-discharge. The capacitors will hold a charge for WEEKS unless discharged (we recommend using a 50 Ohm resistor to discharge the capacitors).
