PHYLLIS SKOLNICK HIRSCHBERG PAINTING Phyllis Skolnick Hirschberg. Oil on canvas, 25″ x 28″; unsigned. Two adjacent paint losses, 1/4″ x 1/8″ and 1/8″-diameter, at the canvas’s lower left corner (2″ from the lower edge); three losses at the canvas’ lower right quadrant (1/2″ x 1/4″, 1/8″-square, 1″ x 1/8″, this last partial / scattered only), each approximately 3″ from the lower edge and exposing the brown underpainting; two paint losses at the canvas’ upper right corner (1/2″ x 1/4″ and 1 1/2″ x (maximum) 1/4″), both at the edge, each exposing the brown underpainting; perhaps, small losses elsewhere; examination of the painting’s reverse side against strong light reveals a moderate amount of fine checking, including 12″, 8″ and several shorter, approximately vertical lines in the canvas’ approximate center, a 10″ line in the canvas’ upper left corner, a quantity of short lines down its left side to a width of approximately 5″. (The photographs of the canvas back here show furrowed lines, representing the checking.) Unframed. Undated; a work from the 1940s. As to locale, this is perhaps Brooklyn, where the artist was born and raised. Provenance: estate of the artist.
