The item up for auction is a limited-edition, unframed, original lithograph by artist Stephen Hazel and is signed with the artist’s monogram by the artist’s hand. This print comes from the Charles Matson Collection. The Charles Matson Collection: Charles Matson, a master printmaker who worked closely with dozens of prominent American and international artists, amassed a collection of hundreds of original works. During years of collaboration the printmaker and the artist, Stephen Hazel, enjoyed a deep friendship. Prints, books and paintings have been carefully stored in archival flat files since the original editions were created. The print will be wrapped, rolled and packaged inside an impact- and water-proof tube, then shipped fully insured. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original work by an important print artist. Stephen Hazel began as a potter, sculptor, and print artist, and completed his studies with Japan’s great woodblock artist Hagiwara Hideo. Hazel taught extensively and was a visiting artist at the University of Iowa, the University of Washington, and Cranbrook Academy. He was invited to be one of twenty-five artists representing the United States in an exhibition with the Contemporary Print Artists of Paris. International exhibitions include Japan, China, Portugal, Italy, Israel, France, Mexico, and Canada. National exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Walker Art Center, Rhode Island School of Design, Carnegie Institute, Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and The Henry Gallery at the University of Washington. Selected collections include The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Collection of the Vatican, Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Volturno, The Brooklyn Museum, Library of Congress, Philadelphia Museum, Detroit Institute of the Arts, Seattle Art Museum, Microsoft, and the Cities of Seattle; Kobe, Japan; and Beersheba, Israel. Hazel died in 2012, leaving a rich legacy of powerful mark making forever impressed upon the print community . Please note that when multiple proofs in our collection differ only by number, (e.g., proof number 1 of 5, to proof number 2 of 5), we do not photograph and list them separately and you may receive a proof with a different number than pictured in the photographs.
