Ohio Governor David Tod was one of the ablest Civil War leaders-Abraham Lincoln said “Tod has aided me more and troubled me less than any other governor”. In the aftermath of Shiloh Tod led the Ohio Sanitary efforts to care for the wounded, giving him the nickname “The Soldiers Friend”. An Original July 1863 letter from Governor David Tod, to Private John Henning, who is seeking a transfer to the 3rd Ohio- Tod is unable to help “besides, your regt will probably be ordered to the field at an early date”.1p 8 x 11 ink, with ptd “State of Ohio Executive Department” heading.
