Mayten “Weeping Green Shower” Tree Seeds (Maytenus boaria) The Mayten Tree is the Perfect Solution to the Search to Find a Small to Medium-Sized Tree that does Well in Zones 8b-11, and that Also Carries the Gorgeous Grace & Beauty of a Weeping Willow. Mayten Tree is Stunningly Beautiful in the Landscape with it’s Pendulous Weeping Branches Covered with Glistening Lacy Green Leaves that Sway Gracefully in the Breezes. It has the Added Benefit of Being Evergreen, Low-Maintenance and Essentially Disease and Pest Free, and of Requiring Much Less Water than a Willow! Mayten Tree was Introduced to California in San Francisco in 1878 and was Available in Santa Barbara before 1900. It’s Growth Rate and Ultimate Size can Vary Greatly Depending on Water Availability. Locally, at Maturity it Usually Develops a Rounded Crown with a Height and Spread of 20 to 30 Feet, and can Also Make a Spectacular Bonsai Specimen. Growing Conditions: Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun with midday shade. Shelter from cold, drying winds. Tends to produce suckers, some far-reaching. Avoid disturbing roots. Zones 8b-11 Mayten Germination: 1) Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. 2) For best results, cold stratify for 60 days by placing seeds in a zip lock bag filled with moist vermiculite, and place inside of the fridge for 60 days.
