Delisle Map of Mississippi Valley 1730 This 1730 map, produced by Delisle, was considered to be one of the finest at the time, and is somewhat of a landmark concerning North American history and Texas cartography. It is one of the first maps to feature the full Mississippi Valley, in addition to marking the importance of the Missouri River as it pertains to the typography of North America itself. Furthermore, it is the first map to display land travel routes used by explorers in earlier centuries. This particular piece actually took several years to produce. Delisle obtained much of his information from early French explorers and the administrators of New France. The fact that he was able to obtain this information directly from the explorers themselves, made the piece stunningly accurate. Delisle had actually prepared a manuscript map very similar to this map in 1701. The Mississippi Valley portion of that map has survived to this day. As mentioned earlier, this map is an important part of Texas history because it is the first map to actually name the state of Texas. Due to its accuracy, it was considered to be one of the most significant maps of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley published during the beginning of the 18th century. Earlier maps were not as descriptive or exact. Delisle’s map was, and because of this, it would remain as a foundational piece of navigation for later explorers. In fact, it is said that this map was so detailed and accurate, that it was one of the oldest maps used by Lewis and Clark when they set out to plan their famous expedition. Of noteworthy mention at the bottom is the inset featuring Mobile Bay. You will notice the absence of New Orleans. That would be added later, in the second addition. One other interesting side note, Mr. Lemaire, referenced in the title of the map; was actually a french priest, stationed for a while in Alabama. His information was very instrumental in helping Delisle prepare this particular map. LeMaire had sent information about the Americas to his priestly order in Paris so they could compile information about the ever expanding region as it became available. One of these was a priest named Father Jean Bobe, a dear friend of Delisle. Father Bobe gave the information compiled by Lemaire to Delisle, and this historical map was produced a short time later. Delisle could not have produced this particular piece of work without the information he received from Lemaire, so he credited him in the work.
