You are buying a Magic the Gathering Alpha Edition Dual land Underground Sea CCG card from Wizards of the Coast collectible card for the game MTG. This card is certified and graded by BGS as 8.5 NM-MT+. Card is graded by Beckett Grading Services (BGS) as 8.5 NM/MT+. A beautiful example of a Alpha card. We believe BGS under graded this card. We have seen a lot of Alpha cards and have not seen one finer in cut , shape and color in a Dual land. We took measurements on measurements and the card is 50/50 side to side and 57 to 43 top to bottom. We have seen many cards with 10 or 9.5 centering score with ratios in this range or worse. ( See our samples Alpha cards with 9.5 and 10 centering grades) On the corners , Alpha’s often had corners that did not match in cut or shape and many with burrs also graded higher than this score of 8.5. ( We can show examples of at least 6 different corner cuts from factory produced Alpha cards) The grade for centering should be 9 or 9.5 on this card. We included several examples of other graded Alpha cards with higher centering grades for illustration. Note the 2 sample cards have centering grades of 10 and 9.5 but have ratios worse than the Underground Sea in this listing. On Alpha corners there are probably several variations of the cuts, shapes and curves of the corners from the printing plant on cards direct from the print run and packs. These shapes are not due to play as they are the result from in consistent production values. There are various reasons for this but one main reason was the dull blades used in cutting the small production run. Many original Alpha cards had a back to front burr bias as the blade created a less than clean cut. The Alpha edition and the production issues begs the question what a Pristine 10 card might be as there are so many original variations one wonders how to define what a perfect Alpha card may be. It has been noted that a pack fresh Alpha card should grade at BGS as 8-9. You can make objective measurements like on the centering, color, clarity but but it seems to us that corners are more subjective. Today with modern MTG cards the corners are more standard and consistent so an objective standard can be developed and used. Not so much, ie a standard, with Alpha cards. How can anyone grade an Alpha corner when the designers did not know what the card would look like ? We say this because we sent in a group of Alpha card pulled from sealed packs and the grades we got back were all over the board. Comments welcome.
