Dried and powdered, it is used to powerfully streghthen the organism. The usable part of the plant is an underground pear-shaped bulb. ASHWAGANDHA Withania somnifera is also known commonly as ashwagandha , Indian ginseng , poison gooseberry or winter cherry . It is used as an herb in Ayurvedic medicine. This species is a short, tender perennial shrub growing 35–75 cm. The flowers are small and green. The ripe fruit is orange-red. The species name somnifera means “sleep-inducing” in Latin. Withania somnifera is cultivated in many of the drier regions of India.
