Lonicera fragrantissima is a flowering plant species in the Caprifoliaceae family known by the common names of winter honeysuckle, fragrant honeysuckle, January Jasmine Chinese honeysuckle, kiss me at the gate, and finally a sweet breath of spring. Species fragrantissima grows in dry to medium soils well-drained and in full sun to part shade. It adapts to a wide range of soils, including dry ones, but prefers moist, loamy soils. Lonicera fragrantissima is commonly called Winter honeysuckle fragrant honeysuckle or January honeysuckle. A somewhat stiff branched deciduous shrub with a bushy spreading habit. Typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall and as wide. It is a highly fragrant vine smelling of lemons. Sporting a short tubed with creamy white flowers that appear in early spring before the leaves emerge. Small, white flowers start in January and continue through March. Flowers are followed by a small red berry that matures in late spring to early summer. The oval dark green foliage sometimes has a bluish tinge to it. The leaves look like other honeysuckle leaves but are broader and more rounded. Cut the budded branches for an early fragrant indoor arrangement. The seeds are dispersed by birds and mammals that eat the berries. Because it blooms early on growth from last year, it can be cut back close to the ground right after flowering and allowed to grow and flower the next winter. It transplants readily, is tolerant of soil pH and poor soils but is intolerant of wet conditions. Zones 4-8 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag.
