Ligularia dentata, commonly known as Leopard Plant or Golden Groundsel, is a striking herbaceous perennial known for its bold foliage and bright, daisy-like flowers. It typically grows 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) tall and wide, with large, heart-shaped, deep green to bronze-purple leaves that can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter, adding a dramatic texture to garden landscapes. In mid to late summer, tall, sturdy stems rise above the foliage, bearing clusters of golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers, which attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. Ligularia thrives in part shade to full shade, preferring consistently moist, rich soils, making it an ideal choice for woodland gardens or alongside ponds and water features. While it can tolerate brief periods of sun, excessive heat or drought may cause the leaves to wilt, so a cool, shaded location with ample moisture is ideal for optimal growth. Zones 3-9 Germination Ligularia dentata seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and encourage successful germination. To prepare the seeds, they should be sown on the surface of a well-draining seed mix and lightly covered with soil. The seeds need to be kept in a cold environment, ideally around 4°C (39°F), for 4-6 weeks, simulating winter conditions.
