Leycesteria formosa is a deciduous shrub in the Caprifoliaceae family. A native to Southwest China and the Himalayas. Common names include flowering nutmeg, Himalaya nutmeg, granny’s curls, or pheasant berry. They are considered a noxious weed in New Zealand, Australia, and some islands around Micronesia. It has upright green stems that form the shrub’s height of 3-6′ tall and can get more expansive than 6′. The sweetly scented flowers are the showstopper here as they hang down, with some flowers being 10″ long. Bloom time is June through September. The birds like to eat the seeds, which turn from green to black with time. The berries are edible and taste like toffee or caramel. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade and is a low-maintenance shrub that will attract the birds, bees, and hummingbirds while resisting deer. Zones 7-9. Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough to stick together like a hamburger. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
