Lettuce Seeds – Buttercrunch (Boston Type) Open Pollinated Days to Maturity: 65 days 1963 All American Selections winner. Heat resistant and slow to bolt! A classic favorite for high-quality flavor. One of the classic butterheads, Buttercrunch combines good garden performance with tender-crisp flavor. The leaves are very dark green and thicker than most, with a crisp texture and juicy bite. They are loosely held on big heads that grow more vigorously than many others, ready in just 65 days. So high-performing and satisfying that it won an AAS award. With a luscious, buttery texture, Buttercrunch has 6 to 8inch heads that are dark green outside with a creamy yellow color inside and smooth, sweet tender leaves . Best picked minutes before your meal and is easy to grow. It prefers moderately moist, well-fertilized soil. Plant at two-week intervals for a continuous supply of tasty lettuce. GENERAL GROWING INFORMATION Can be started early indoors or directly in the garden. Grows best in cool weather, 55-60ºF. Seeds go dormant at temperatures above 85ºF. Sowing : Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Repeat at 2-week intervals until late spring. Sow again in late summer and fall. Care : Water regularly and fertilize when 3 inches tall. Provide light shade for summer sowing. Harvest : Pick leaves anytime as needed, but before they yellow or reach the size of your hand or cut entire plant. Your Health : Rich in fiber and potassium, with moderate amount of vitamin A. Sowing Depth : 1/8 inch Germination: 7-14 days, 50-70ºF. Days to Maturity: 65 days Sun: Full Sun Sowing Method: Direct Sow/Indoor Sow Spread: 6 inches Height: 9-15 inches Thinning: 8 inches Days to pick the first ripe fruit from the time the plant is transplanted in the garden. Light: Full sun to part shade Head size: 6 to 8 inches (semi-heading) Matures: 21 days for leaves, 65 for head Plant spacing: 8 to 10 inches apart Botanical Name: Lactuca sativa Detailed planting instructions: When To Plant Spacing & Depth Direct seed or transplant in early spring, as soon as you can work the soil. To get an early start, prepare beds the previous fall by working in manure or compost and raking smooth to leave a fine seedbed. If a fall crop is desired, begin in late summer. Direct-seeding: Sow seed 1/8 inch deep, (Seeds need light to germinate, so do not plant too deep). 1 inch apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. When plants have two or three true leaves, thin to 6 to 10 inch spacing. You can also lightly broadcast seed in a patch instead of a row. Repeat at 2-week intervals until late spring for a continuous supply of lettuce throughout the season. Transplants: Sow in 1-inch cells 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting outside. Harden seedlings by reducing water and temperature for 3 days before transplanting. Care The key to lettuce production is supplying moderate but almost constant water, especially during hot weather. Unless there is regular rainfall, lettuce must be watered deeply at least once a week—more frequently during periods of drought. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Lettuce is generally disease and pest free, but you should still be vigilant. Watch for lettuce rot which first attacks the lower leaves in contact with the soil and then spreads throughout the plant. The best way to prevent diseases is to rotate crops. Don’t plant lettuce in the same bed two years in a row. Harvest Harvesting lettuce is relatively simple: Leaf lettuce can be cut as soon as it is large enough to use, usually in 50 to 60 days from planting. For the best quality, it’s better to pick early than late as lettuce allowed to grow too long may be bitter and tough. Cut the plant right at the soil line when mature, if you prefer to harvest full heads. Cutting every other plant at the ground will give remaining plants more space for growth. To keep the plants producing longer, harvest only the outer leaves, as needed. Try to harvest in the morning when the leaves are crisp, sweet and full of moisture. Germination: Seeds Packets are labeled with seed name and sowing details. Seeds have not been pretreated unless specified in the listing. Seed is not a specific Cultivar (Variety) unless specified in the listing.
