LISTED Old Master William Tomkins ORIGINAL MUSEUM QUALITY Landscape with Cows Large Oil Painting William Tomkins (1730/1732 – 1792) Royal Academy Provenance This Painting Was Exhibited at Royal Academy in 1778 Auction records to $97,000.00 Description Items: William Tomkins Large MUSEUM QUALITY Old Master Landscape with Cows ORIGINAL Oil Painting Artist: William Tomkins (1730/32-1792) Please note that some sources cite Tomkins date of birth as being “1730”, while other sources have cited it as being “1732”. I am uncertain which date is correct. Provenance: From a Private Southern California Art Collection. Other provenance is with John Moran Auctioneers who attributed this painting to Tomkins and wrote that it was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1778. After doing some research, it is documented that Tomkins did exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1778 and I believe this painting is titled “A Landscape, Morning” and is catalog entry #311, in “The Exhibition of the Royal Academy MDCCLXXVIII The Tenth” published by T. Ladell, in London, for The Royal Academy, in 1778. This catalog has also been published online and this painting’s entry can be seen on page 23, at: The catalog fully assigns authorship to Tomkins and the painting was probably directly given to the Royal Academy by Tomkins for the exhibition. Signed: Not signed. There is a metal plaque on the frame that reads: “Morning – Wm. Tomkins A.R.A. – Exhibited Royal Academy 1778 – Born 1730 – Died 1792″. Medium: Oil on canvas (laid to Masonite board). The board was probably added in the 1960’s or 1970’s. Painting’s Size: 24.25″ by 36”. Framed: Yes. The custom made frame measures 30″ H x 42″ W x 2.25″ D and is in good condition. The frame is not as old as the painting and was probably made within the past 30 years. Painting’s Condition: Stable crazing and varnish discoloration throughout. There are also some spots of inexpertly done inpainting and there are stretcher bar creases along the four edges. I believe the painting’s colors and detail will be enhanced once the old varnish has been removed and the painting has been cleaned. Ultraviolet Light Test: Scattered inpainting. The largest area of inpainting is a 4″ by 4″ area on the lower left. Special Shipping: Yes. Due to it’s value and importance, it will be securely packed and shipped. Please note that I am only charging the actual shipping cost or less. There is no charge for handling, materials or for transporting it to the shipper. Shippers consider this packaged painting to be “oversized”, which is the reason for the higher shipping charge. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I am pleased to have the opportunity to offer this large, museum quality original oil painting by famous listed English artist- William Tomkins! Tomkins was one of the Royal Academy’s first associates and his paintings can be found in many important permanent art collections, including the Tate Gallery, in London; National Trust, Saltram; National Trust, Stourhead, and National Trust, Dunster Castle. Tomkins’s early training was influenced by French artist- Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), as well as 17th Dutch artist- Meindert Hobbema and 17th century Italian artist- Salvator Rosa, whose work he studied and copied. By 1763, Tomkins had developed his own style and won 2nd prize for best landscape by the Society of Arts. Subsequently, through the patronage of Edward Walter of Stalbridge, he obtained considerable employment in painting views, chiefly of scenery in the north and west of England. Tomkins exhibited with the Free Society of Artists from 1761 to 1764 and with the Incorporated Society from 1764 to 1768. In 1771, he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy and exhibited there annually from 1769 to 1790. He was employed by the Earl of Fife to paint some views of his Lordship’s seat in Scotland and continued to exercise his talents with great respectability until his death, while living on Queen Anne Street, London, on 1 Jan. 1792. Some of Tomkins’s works were engraved in Angus’s and Watts’s sets of views of seats of the nobility. In this painting, Tomkins chose to depict an early morning landscape with cows, as his subject matter. Possessing deft brushwork, a rich color palette and and masterful use of chiaroscuro, he captured both- the beauty and peacefulness of the location! As many of you know, most paintings with this age & quality are locked-up in a museums or other important collections where they may not see the light of day again! Tomkin’s paintings are very sought after by collectors and have sold for more than $91,000 at auction. If you would like to see another one of his paintings that sold for more than $60,000.00 (USD), please go to: I think you’ll agree, this painting is much more interesting and better executed than the painting Christie’s sold at the hyperlink above!
