This is an excellent Stereo card of the Santa Barbara Mission showing a number of 1910’s cars parked in front and a man reading in Santa Barbara, California . It is from a Very Rare Keystone California Missions 50 card set (the cards are numbered 1 to 50) from about the 1920’s or 1930’s . This set features 1-8 views of the California Spanish Missions. The Spanish missions in California comprise a series of 21 religious outposts or missions established between 1769 and 1833 in today’s U. S. State of California by Catholic priests of the Franciscan order. They are spaced about 30 miles apart (about one day’s journey on horseback, or three days on foot) along the 600-mile California Missions Trail stretching from San Diego to Sonoma (north of San Francisco Bay). They played an important part in early California history and some remain popular tourist destinations today. These views were taken by photographer Philip Brigandi in the early 1910’s. Brigandi soon associated with the Keystone View Co. and the set was published on Keystone mounts with blank backs. Views from this set are rarely seen on eBay and are usually seen in rather low condition. This card is titled “Mission (10th) Santa Barbara, Calif., Founded Dec. 4, 1786 by Fr. Lasuen – Cross Dedicated to Fr. Serra.” with a Keystone negative number of 23035 and a position number of 17. This card is in excellent condition and measures 3 1/2″ by 7”. The back of the card is blank. I will be listing more Stereoviews on a regular basis, so check back for more views. Don’t miss out! Stereoviews or stereo cards have two nearly identical images mounted side by side. When looked at through a stereo viewer they give a three-dimensional image. Most popular from 1854 to 1938, they were produced in vast quantities, and many are of historical interest. They usually measure about 3 ½” by 7”. Domestic buyers (including Alaska, Hawaii, US Territories, APO, or FPO) to prepay $10.00 shipping and handling for insured Priority Mail (mailed in a box) or $5.50 for Ground Advantage Mail (mailed in an envelope between two pieces of cardboard).
