Ipomoea tricolor var. heavenly blue, commonly known as the Mexican Morning Glory or Grannyvine, is a flowering, herbaceous, annual vine in the morning glory family of Convolvulaceae. While originally native to the tropics of the New World, this species has been naturalized to live almost anywhere. Ipomoea tricolor has alternate, simple, heart-shaped leaves 3-6 inches in length and have blue, funnel-shaped, fused flowers with a white and gold center that open in the mornings of summer and fall. This variant is prized for its deep and distinctive color. Ipomoea tricolor var. heavenly blue has a long rich history of spiritual ceremonial use by the Aztec, Mazotec, Zapotec, and the Contal Indians. USDA hardiness zones 3-10. Soak the Ipomoea Tricolor seeds in warm water for 12 prior to planting. Sow the seeds early in spring in a well draining potting soil. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet and allow for plenty of sun. Keep between 65°F and 80°F for best results and to maximize blooms throughout summer. Seeds typically take 5-21 days to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
