Hibiscus tiliaceus is an evergreen shrub or tree in the Malvaceae family. Its native range is from western tropical Africa. Familiar names include sea hibiscus, beach hibiscus, coastal cottonwood, green cottonwood, native hibiscus, native rosella, cottonwood hibiscus, kurrajong, sea rosemallow, and dhigga. It can grow at sea level to 2,600 feet with annual rainfalls of 100 inches. It can grow on beaches, along rivers, and in mangrove swamps. It has adapted to grow along coastal environments with salt, coral sand, limestone, marl, basalt, and quartz sand. The wood is used for seacraft construction, wood carvings, and firewood. It can grow to around 30 feet tall from a fairly small trunk reaching 6 inches in diameter. The leaves are heart-shaped and deep green. The flowers come out bright yellow with a red center. Throughout the day, the flowers change to deep orange and turn red before falling off. It prefers to grow in full sun with well-drained, consistently moist soil.
