As t his 19 80 Album is nothing – short of Absolutely-Amazing !!… as for me personally – I’ve always kind of thought that this Album is actually the most ‘ underrated ‘ Grateful Dead Studio Album of All-Time ! It got some serious respect upon it’s April ’80 release and all – and, of course after too. But, it just never reached the ‘ Historic ‘ level which I wholeheartedly feel that it deserves, and that it truly has earned. In fact, I remember reading a story long-ago – something about how Clive Davis ( from Arista Records ) actually asked Brent is he would change a ‘ lyric ‘ in ” Easy To Love You ” ?! And, really … my point being – would he have asked that of Jerry ? I’d at least hope to think not. But … Brent was indeed the ‘ new guy ‘ in the Band, and what was always kind of sad to me … is that it seemed like he still always ‘ felt ‘ like the new guy in the Band … even up to & during the Massive ! ( & Beyond-Legendary ! ) 1989 & 1990 G rateful Dead Tours – even ‘ after ‘ singing a very-impressive Four ( 4 ) ! of the Songs on the Built To Last Album !?! So yeah … Brent’s in the Band for ‘ over ‘ 10-years, and still ( at least ‘ kinda ‘ ) always felt like the new guy. And … to me, it’s just wrong. It was never any fault of his Band mates, but … it kind of was the fault of some Fans. This guy was delivering all he had in his heart, night after night, and Show after Show … and so-often you had to be in the Dead Parking Lot while on Tour, hearing someone ( basically ‘ incorrectly ‘ ) downing Brent. I mean hey … I totally understand that many Deadheads do not like change & all – and … that’s cool – I’m even one of them too, in general. I mean it just can’t be ’69, ’72, ’73, ’76 & ’77 forever though, right ? I just remember being on the Spring ’90 Tour, and the Band was-just-Hot !! … like Red-Hot !!! ( just think … 3/14/90 ! ) and some guy in the lot was telling me that he thought he might just tour with this new band at the time called Phish – because he was tired of listening to Brent sing. And man … I have to tell you – ” What ” on Earth was this guy hearing ? – or listening to ?! Because we walked out of the exact same Cap Centre Show that day – and Brent just helped delivered the Hottest ! Earth-shattering Dear Mr. Fantasy I had ever even seen , or heard ?!? It was just an opinion that would float around a lot in that era, and I just didn’t get it … as for me ? The ‘ Brent ‘ action was a main part of what I was looking forward to – and I think Jerry & the Boys all felt like I did !?! I mean this-guy had more soul in his little pinky, then most musicians could ever even dream of. And thankfully Brent kept-at-it, loved the encouragement he did received – from those who matter … and he was really-really ‘ key ‘ in not only making the Dead’s final album ‘ Built to Last ‘ a great one, but … he could also completely Smoke ! 100K+ Stadium Crowds – practically all on his Own ! ( when needed ). Just him! … & that Soul ! – the B-3, the Beard, the Gold Rolex, and even sometimes too ( if you’re really lucky ) … that ” Live Free Or Die ! ” Harley Davidson Shirt !!! Yeah ! As That’s ! … Rock & Roll !!! No doubt, that Brent did do his best … to Live Free ! But, don’t we all though … right ? I mean let’s put it this way too … on this Album ” Go To Heaven ” – as a Guitar Player myself, this is the Album I think I might even go to the Most ?! – if I want to hear something, learn-something, or play along with something that has that solid Grate ! tone & style. It’s so ” Easy To Love You ” Brent … and that comes from deep-down, when I say it … as I mean it. So yeah … this ‘ Officially ‘ marked the pro-release ” Brent-Era “, and his tone & st yle is heavily present. So-many 1980’s G.D. Set staples on here too … Alabama Getaway – Far From Me – Althea – Lost Sailor – Saint of Circumstance – Easy To Love You – and even… Don’t Ease Me In !!!
