Heirloom seeds, non GMO, open pollinated Nepeta Cataria*CATNIP* Perennial Herb *Heirloom *Medicinal *Herbal Tea An absolute favorite of the garden pollinators!! Attracts lots of different kinds of bees and butterflies. These are Fresh 2024 Seeds, not yet cold stratified (if purchase before Dec. 2024… after that, they will be stratified and ready to plant for several months; if they sit for months, you will need to re-chill them before trying to sprout them) CATNIP PLANT INFO: Of course, the Catmint or Catnip plant is well known for it’s popularity with the fur babies of the feline persuasion. However, it is JUST as useful as a medicinal herb for humans, as it is a mood elevator for the kitties. Catnip is a member of the mint family, and has a lot of the same medicinal purposes as other mints such as peppermint and spearmint. They are relaxing, help with pain relief, anxiety, and sleep disorders. The catnip plant is also used as a bronchodilator, expectorant and antispasmodic. So it is used in the relief of cold and flu symptoms, and when used in conjunction with lemon and honey, (and maybe a shot of whiskey), makes a wonderful hot tea for sore throats and coughs. It can be used either fresh or dried, like other mints. It has a lovely smelling kind of lemony minty aroma, with large saw edged pointy leaved, bright to deep green foliage, and very pale purple blossoms. It is easy to grow, and reseeds readily. It is a perennial, and propagates new plants by seed. It does NOT grow by sending out ground/root runners like the peppermint and spearmint plants do. So it will not take over an area quickly like those mints do. But will spread readily by reseeding, Catnip likes full sun, but can also do quite well in some shade as well. It likes to stay well watered, but prefers a well draining soil, rather than soggy soils, whereas Peppermint or Spearmint can tolerate very wet, swampy soils. The Catnip will not take to that environment nearly as well, and prefers to dry out between waterings. It will do well even in poor soils, and doesn’t require much care. Regular pruning/harvesting will keep the plant short and bushy. But if you want to attract those pollinators, just allow it to do it’s own thing, and do not prune. Grow in pots if you want to control spread, or keep small plants. Being a mint, they are very prolific spreaders!!! Grown 100% all naturally. We use all natural soil amendments and fertilizers; all homemade or eco friendly bug and disease controls, ONLY when ABSOLUTELY necessary…. and fresh rain water. SEED & PLANTING INFO: Germination time: 10-20 days USDA ZONES: 3-9 Planting Depth: surface sow and lightly cover (no more than 1/8″ of loose soil on top) Sunlight: needed Soil Temperature: 55-65 degrees. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Cover with clear plastic to maintain humidity. IF germinating outdoors and its over 80 degrees, keep them in the shade during the afternoon heat. Allow them to get full sun in the mornings only, so the soil temp doesn’t rise too much. Transplanted Seedlings need a lot of room, these plants will get pretty large! they grow to as much as 4 ft in height, and can get about the same across. You can also just sow the seeds in late fall or winter, in place. Cover with a thick layer of mulch that you remove at last frost… or upper section of plastic 2 liter bottles cut in half. But leave cap off, so water can get in and heat from sun can escape.
