Very different cool tool used by a confectioner to make what is known today as candy corn. It took me a great while to figure out what it was! Says on the metal band, The Ed. Messer Confectionery Co. Chicken Corn Cincinnati, Ohio. The handle is wood with holes as perhaps it was hung around ones neck or hung up on the tool board. It has a sharp blade surrounded by plates or guides, one of which has a small notch. I have no idea how they made the candy corn out of this but folks with candy making or tool types will get it I’m sure! My guess is that this could date back to the early 1900’s when it was known as chicken corn. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that it was called candy corn.If you look up the surprising history of candy corn.. this is partly what it says: ” At the beginning, candy corn was actually called “chicken feed.” This made sense considering in those days corn was chicken feed. People didn’t eat corn the way we do today. Chicken feed/corn (the candy) had no association with Halloween or fall. It was, however, a seasonal candy due to the tedious nature of the work. Chicken feed was only available between March and November.” A great, informative article and there are lots more.Thank you for stopping by! Buy with Confidence from DDogmoxie. .
