The ionizer electrodes have a small DC voltage applied to them which forces copper alloy ions to pass from one electrode to the other. The ions are caught up in the water as water passes between the electrodes. These copper alloy ions attack and kill the bacteria and algae in your pool. To maintain clean, clear water all you need to do is maintain a low .2 ppm of chlorine in your pool , which is 1/10th the chlorine needed without the ionizer. What about a Cartridge Ionizer? You should not use a cartridge ionizer. They are very expensive, have to be replaced every few months, and you have very little or no control on the amount of ionization being produced. They are sold without a test kit so you never know what the ion level is. The best method of ionizing a pool and the lowest cost over time is with an electronic ionizer. What about a Floating Solar Ionizers? You should not use a floating solar ionizer as you have almost no control of the ionizer output and the electrodes are copper only and very small and need replaced often. What about Ionizers with Silver? The silver content in ionizer electrodes should not contain more than 2% silver as it can be toxic and cause staining at high levels. The 2″ PVC cell is glued into the pool circulation system after the filter, and the controller is connected to the pump timer circuit so it has power only when the circulation pump is running. What Chemicals Will I Needed to Use With a Pool Sunshine Ionizer? You will maintain .3 ppm copper level, so you will only need to maintain .3 ppm of chlorine in your pool using chlorine tablets, granules or liquid chlorine. Do not use Calcium Hypochlorite chlorine as it hardens the pool water creating scale to your pool surfaces. You can use bromine if you prefer. It has been proven that maintaining .2 ppm chlorine and .2 ppm copper is more effective sanitation than using just chlorine at 2 ppm. You must also maintain your pH between 7.0 and 7.4. How often will I need to test the water? You will need to test the copper ion level, with the test kit provided, every couple of weeks, and check the chlorine and pH level once a week.
