Eisler has a short essay on German drawing where he says that line, rather than color, evokes an emotional response. He indicates that for German speaking people, the line is the cornerstone of art. Eisler points out that in the 15th century German art was most influenced by the Gothic international style of flowing compositions and several works by Schongauer, a master of this style, are included. However the influence of realism from the Netherlands began to have influence. Printmaking excelled in German and many of the artists in this technique aimed toward realistic images. Of Durer Eisler says “As industrious as he was talented, Durer’s art is a marvel of zealous scrutiny, inspired craftsmanship and erudition.” Durer was a master of every technique and medium including oil-painting and print-making. Durer visited Italy twice and was influenced by Bellini and Mantegna. Eisler points out that it is in the drawing or print that Durer excels and that his paintings sometimes are over-wrought. Eisler indicates that Durer, while greatly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, was able to fluctuate back and forth between Italian and Germanic styles. Included in the collection is the striking image of Durer’s mother in old age.
