This is a really clever kitchen utensil called the DIX COFFEE METER or measuring tin. Item measures 3″ tall X 2″ diameter. When percolators were in use to make coffee you would use a coffee measure to determine exactly how much ground coffee was needed for the brew. The attached sliding metal disk would be inserted into one of the slots depending on how many cups you wished to brew. 2, 4 or 6 cups. You would then pour the desired amount of ground coffee into the percolator basket, add the necessary cups of water to the base, apply heat and soon have a nice percolated cup of fine coffee. This very nice example has most of it’s original tin-plating, and the advertising is clear and legible even after all these amazing 116 years. Advertising copy reads “Good Things To Eat At The Berthe Market-We Furnish Your Table Complete-We Roast and Blend All Our Coffees Fresh Daily” . Truthfully, it appears that this coffee measure was seldom if ever used and it is in exceptionally nice original condition. Patent date is clearly stamped on the base of the container and reads “SEPT 1908”. From my collection to yours.
