Check out my other garden delights! Apiarists, homesteaders, and gardeners will definitely find something of interest! *I HAVE BEEN GROWING PASSIFLORA INCARNATA FOR 30 YEARS. BE WARY OF THE OTHER PASSIFLORA INCARNATA LISTINGS ON EBAY. MANY OF THEM ARE COMPLETELY INACCURATE. MOST HAVE NEVER GERMINATED THEIR OWN. MOST ARE JUST RESELLING SEED FROM WHAT I WOULD TERM “QUESTIONABLE” SOURCES. MANY OF THEM HAVE PICTURES FROM THE INTERNET OF COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SPECIES! ANYONE USING THE COMMON NAME “GRANDILLA” ALONGSIDE PASSIFLORA INCARNATA SHOULD HAVE HIS EBAY ACCOUNT SUSPENDED UNTIL HE TAKES SOME REMEDIAL HORTICULTURE CLASSES. Taxonomic Information: Genus: Passiflora Species: Incarnata Description: The pictures are of my plants. I did not get the images on the Internet. Those are my pictures! Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as maypop, purple passionflower, true passionflower, wild apricot, pomegranate vine, and wild passion vine, is a fast-growing perennial vine with climbing or trailing stems. A member of the passionflower genus Passiflora, the maypop has large, intricate flowers with prominent styles and stamens. For most of the United States of America, we grow the vine as a “die-back” plant. In the winter (roughly USDA zones 4-9), the vine will die back to the ground. The vine comes back in the spring. In USDA zone 7, we experience 10-30 ft of growth on a single plant producing multiple vines and off-shoots. In USDA zones 4-6, I would heavily mulch the plant in the winter. Deep soil freezes can kill the plant. The “Passion” in “passion flower” refers to the passion of Jesus in Christian theology. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the unique physical structures of this plant, particularly the numbers of its various flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus and especially his crucifixion. The symbolism: The pointed tips of the leaves were taken to represent the Holy Lance. The tendrils represent the whips used in the flagellation of Christ. The ten petals and sepals represent the ten faithful apostles (excluding St. Peter the denier and Judas Iscariot the betrayer). The flower’s radial filaments, which can number more than a hundred and vary from flower to flower, represent the crown of thorns. The chalice-shaped ovary with its receptacle represents a hammer or the Holy Grail. The 3 stigmas represent the 3 nails and the 5 anthers below them the 5 wounds (four by the nails and one by the lance). The blue and white colors of many species’ flowers represent Heaven and Purity. What is Included: Seeds are offered in different quantities. Please select from the drop-down menu above. Germination Information: Plant them 1/4″ to 1/2″ deep. Keep moist and warm (above 70F). You can quicken germination by soaking in warm water for one day. You can further encourage germination by lightly sanding the outer seed coat. Consumption: The fruits make fantastic juice! Terrific stuff! Why buy passionfruit juice when you can enjoy it fresh? Furthermore, the fruits are great for jellies and jams! Medicinal Uses: The plant is traditionally used to treat insomnia and anxiety. The plant (extracts of its leaves) has been scientifically tested to prove its anxiety and insomnia treatment (sources below).
