HISTORIC MOUNTED WAR IMAGE Dieppe: Operation Jubilee, 19 August 1942 The disastrous Dieppe raid was one of the most controversial military operations of the war. It was planned as an experiment in landing technique, in anticipation of the opening of the Second Front. The objective was to take and briefly hold the French port of Dieppe with a mixed force of 5,000 Canadian and 1,000 British troops. The force was landed on 19 August 1942 and was immediately subjected to intensive air and sea attacks. Once ashore the raiders had only intermittent close air support and within a few hours, the operation had become a disaster. Of the 6,000 Allied troops involved, 4,000 were killed, captured or wounded. This chart shows RAF operations during the raid and the location of German units in France. The air battle over the beachheads was the most intensive of the war in the West.
