Coyote Gourd Seeds ( Cucurbita P almata ) – 3 0 seeds – Harvested wild in the Mojave desert , this is a very drought resisting vine with beautiful flowers. These even produce melons that were useful to the natives. Commonly called “coyote melon” and known to botanists as Cucurbita palmata , also called the desert pumpkin, the coyote melon is a member of the Gourd Family ( Cucurbitaceae ) as is the much larger pumpkin ( Cucurbita pepo ) of Halloween fame. Since the two are in the same genus Cucurbita, it can be argued that they are as closely related as they can be without being the same species. Coyote melon has one of the largest and latest blooming spring flowers in our desert. With a diameter of about four inches and a bold, orange-yellow color, the coyote melon flower is unlikely to be missed. In fact the only native plant that produces a larger, single-headed flower is the jimson weed. Surprisingly, the most impressive part of the coyote melon is not the flower or the fruit but its enormous tuber-like root. Coyote melon is a perennial that spends most of the year more or less dormant underground. Only in late spring do its long, ground-hugging stems emerge on which will grow surprisingly large leaves, some of which reach the size and shape of a human palm.
