Colonel Julian Edward Bryant, nephew of William Cullen Bryant enlisted in the Bloomington Illinois College “Teachers Brigade’, 33rd Illinois Volunteers in 1861and served as a Union spy at Pilot Knob, Missouri, arming & liberating slaves. he led his men of the 33rd Illinois at Vicksburg and his command was cited for the Defense of Milliken’s Bend. He drowned while commanding the 46th US Colored Infantry, comprise of Arkansas Freedmen in 1865. An original Ration Return for Private William Haynes, Co B, 1st Louisiana Cavalry Scouts, October, 1864, signed by Julian E Bryant as Colonel, 46th USCT & Post Commander (at Haines Bluff). 1p 11 x 6” ptd/ink.
