Some common names include California mugwort, Douglas’s sagewort, or dream plant. Native to California, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Baja California, and Mexico. In the sunflower family, this aromatic dicot was used for making beer and alieving headaches from Native Indians. It prefers to grow in full sun but can tolerate dry shady spots. They can grow to 8 feet tall but are usually seen around 4-5′. The baby leaves come out oval un-serrated. They become serrated and lobed as they grow older. From May to October, the flowers emerge in bell-shaped clusters with 5-9 pistillate flowers and 20 or so disk flowers. Zones 6-10 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
