Aristolochia contorta, commonly known as northern pipevine, also known as birthwort , and Ma dou ling, nipponica These seeds are from my Aristrolochia contorta that grows on my front porch. It is a lovely climber and, as it grows in, it provides some extra privacy on our porch. I like this plant as the leaves have a much more delicate aspect than the larger types of Dutchman’s Pipe that grow in zone 4. This is a vigorous grower and grows in a rocky spot next to the porch. It does appreciate well-drained soil. You’ve got to watch this plant as it is likely to spread. I dig up the babies and pass them on. You should take care to remove the seed pods in October or so before they spread. I leave the leaves up through the fall for added interest. They ultimately fall off, leaving behind their charming twisty stems which I’ve used in flower arrangements. The flowers on this range from green to purply tube shaped flowers which bloom during July to August, The flowers are small and unobtrusive. The seed pods are like wonderful little upside down parachutes. I harvest these and have been known to spray paint them for fun little Christmas ornaments. This wonderful vine can grow quite tall if given a structure to climb on. They are hardy in zones from three to eight and prefer partial to full shade. Growing: Ideally, you’ll want to sow these directly in a mulched bed outside in the fall. If you aren’t able to do that, then you’ll want to cold stratify these for 90 days before planting. Sow the seeds about 1/4″ deep, tamp the soil and then add some mulch on top. Sow the seeds at 20c/68f. These can take up to 3 months to germinate. Some people suggest soaking the seeds in water and letting them stand in the water for 24 hours. Please note that we do not ship this item internationally!
