Antirrhinum majus var. maximum is an evergreen herbaceous annual or perennial if living in zones 7-11. Its native range is from south-central France to the Iberian peninsula and Baleares. Familiar names include snapdragon or common snapdragon, great snapdragon, lion’s-mouth, rabbit’s mouth, bonny rabbits, calf-snout, toad’s mouth, lion’s-snap, and bulldogs. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The name snapdragon comes from the flower’s reaction to having its throats squeezed, which causes the mouth of the flower to snap open like a dragon’s mouth. They have been used for cut flowers and ornamental plants since the 15th century. It can grow to around 3 feet tall with broad leaves arranged in a spiral. The flowers are in bloom from mid to late summer with many colors. The two lips are usually a different color from the flower. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs and well-drained soil. Zones 7-11 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil, tamp down, and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot.
