Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Greenville Collins’. Capt. Greenville Collins (1643-1694). Collins was an officer of the Royal Navy and prominent hydrographer, who was commissioned by King Charles II in 1676 and appointed by Samuel Pepys (then Secretary to the Admiralty), to chart the coasts of Great Britain. The resulting atlas – Great Britain’s Coasting Pilot – was the first original sea atlas to be produced by an Englishman. Subject: Antique print, titled: ‘Carte des Principaux Ports des Isles Orcades …’ – A map of the Orkney islands near Scotland. This includes the islands Shapinsay, Gairsay, Wyre, Rousay (partly) and Egilsay, as well as a few small islands. Kirkwall is depicted in the far left of the map. Three insets (l.l. to t.r.): unidentified bay; the strait between Hoy and Mainland, with Graemsay; five island profiles. With depth soundings, currents, rhumb lines and a compass rose. Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. Some scattered foxing and small stains. Faintly dampstained in the lower left margin corner. A small stain in the top right margin corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
