Alstroemeria psittacina is a herbaceous perennial in the Alstromeriaceae family. Its native range is from Brazil to northern Argentina. Familiar names include Lily of the Incas, Parrot Lily, Peruvian Lily, Princess Lily, and New Zealand Christmas bell. It grows in tropical wetlands in nature. It produces tubers that are beans size and many of them from one plant. It can be grown in containers and prefer protection from the wind. It can grow to around 2-3 feet tall with constantly moist soil. The stems are erect and have reddish-purple spots. The flowers are slender and open at the top of the plant, with 5-10 fully open simultaneously. The flowers are a dark crimson with bright green tips and mahogany streaks in bloom from mid-summer until early fall. It prefers to grow in full sun with partial shade. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 7-10 Germination Sow seeds 1/4″ deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
