[VOL. 1.], edited by Condy Raguet, publisher unknown Philadelphia. 422 pages, half leather covered boards with wear and bumped corners, binding good, text appears to be complete with some foxing. This early American periodical contains all manner of articles on economic and political issues of the day, e.g. states’ rights, free trade, alien and sedition laws, and the like. The stated purpose of the publication being “to disseminate the great principles of Constitutional Liberty…[and] advocate the Republican doctrines of ’98, as set forth in the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, and as maintained by Jefferson, Madison, M’Kean, and the other distinguished champions of State Rights and State Remedies.” Includes extracts from letters and documents by Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and others. THE EXAMINER was shortlived, ending in July 22, 1835.Interesting opinion letter about slavery by Daniel Webster. Index in the back is very helpful when looking for exact subjects. Several articles on the abolition of slavery and a reference to Nat Turner’s Rebellion.
