It “dresses to impress” for the differing seasons and offers both beauty and function. Features: green stems, green leaves, red and yellow flowers the majority of the year… then in autumn/winter months the leaves drop and the stems turn a deep red color. The flowers are all-red and black edible berries form (when berries form the yellow color fades). This Californian native species grows to 6-10 ft. height and makes for a great windbreak or hedge ! The fruits are edible but bitter tasting. The bark and twigs have medicinal properties and poultices made from the twigs and bark can be used externally to assist with pain-related ails. How to Care for Twinberry Honeysuckle Lonicera involucrata can be grown in both full sun and full shade. Prune in late winter or early spring (up to 1/3 rd of the plant can be pruned). Sweet nectar from the flowers attracts hummingbirds. Fertilize sparingly (once yearly in spring). Germination Procedure: Soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours. Next, cold stratify seeds for 3-4 months in the freezer before sowing in order to simulate winter and thus break seed dormancy. Alternatively, the soaked seeds can be s own in fall for spring sprouts.
