Offered here are 30 extra-large German cigarette cards of the 1936 German Summer Olympics (Picture Group 61), issued in 1936 by Reemtsma Cigarette Co. for the two-volume album Olympiade 1936 (The Olympic Games of 1936). Pictured here are: No. 1: Dr. Karl Ritter von Halt, President of the Organizational Committee for the IV. Winter Olympics of 1936, welcomes the national teams from 28 nations in the Olympic Stadium in his opening address. No. 6: Around midday on August 1, 1936 German youths gathered in the Lustgarten in Berlin for a celebration of the upcoming Olympics. No. 8: A view of the Olympic Stadium from the west side, with a look at the Chancellor’s Suite as well as the booths for radio and press. No. 13: German Chancellor A.H. enters the Olympic Stadium through the South Gate on August 2 nd , the first day of the Olympic Games. No. 39: Twelve top runners are at the starting blocks for the 1,500-meter finals, among them the Germans Schaumburg and Böttcher. No. 61: The exciting Pole Vault competition lasted some 5 hours. The Japanese participants Oe and Nishida both had the same result and finished second and third in the competition. Our picture shows Oe making a vault. No. 68: The participants in the Olympic marathon are shown here leaving the Olympic stadium through a tunnel after having run a lap inside the stadium . After this short distance, the mass of runners is already separating. No. 71: Still upright and with energy and strength Kitei Son, the hardened Japanese marathon runner, is the first to tear the finish line tape after 42 kilometers in the Olympic stadium. No. 80: Pictured here is the deciding moment in the women’s 4 x 100-meter relay race. Miss Dollinger and Miss Dörffeldt, both Germans, want to pass the baton, but it was dropped. (The arrow in the picture points to the baton.) This certainly cost the German team the gold medal. No. 87: The Olympic national flags are decorated with a commemorative ribbon. All 28 nations attending the IV. Winter Olympic Games had their flag decorated in this way. And with each decoration there also sounded a loud firework detonation. No. 100: Marshall Wayne, the victor in the high dive from the tower, is shown here in one of his excellent jumps. No. 101: The gold medalists in Olympic Water Polo: the team from Hungary, which repeated its previous gold medal at the 1932 Olympics. No. 117: The start of the 10,000-meter two-man canoe event on the first day of the Olympic canoe regatta. No. 129: The successful German boxing team: (from left) Runge (Heavyweight), Vogt (Half-Heavyweight), Murach (Welterweight), Miner and Kaiser (Flyweight). As a team they won 2 gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal for Germany. No. 132: Shown here is a group of American track-and-field athletes. One can easily recognize Johnson, Lymann, O’Brien, Peacock, Hardin, McCluskey, Venzke, Robinson. No. 134: Hans Heinrich Sievert is the German World Record Holder in the most prized Olympic competition of the decathlon. No. 135: Because of the large number of participants made it necessary that two rings were set up in the wrestling hall for simultaneous matches. No. 136: Gisela Mauermayer, Germany’s best female pentathlete, holds the world record in the discus throw. No. 137: Germany did not participate in the first Olympic Soccer Tournament in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium. Our picture shows Belgium and Czechoslovakia at that tournament during the coin toss before the game. No. 141: The medals ceremony in weightlifting. The medalist were: Touni of Egypt (middle, gold), Ismayr of Germany (right, silver), and Wagner of Germany (left, bronze). No. 142: Shown here is the “Italian Corner” of the Olympic Stadium in which fans of the Italian soccer team cheer on their team against Austria. Flags are frequently waved in support and each attack by the Italian team is followed by cheers and calls by the fans. No. 145: In the year before the 1936 Olympics German amateur boxers had considerable success in international competitions. Here we see the German boxing team (left) before its competition against the Polish boxing team in Essen. No. 147 (Group 55): German wrestlers who would be competing in the Olympics trained at the facility in Benneckenstein. In the open air, protected somewhat from the wind by cloth barriers, they diligently trained. Here we see some of the wrestlers practicing on a mat under the pine trees outside. No. 147 (Group 59): The German Handball National Team enters the playing field to the cheers of a hundred thousand fans for the match against Switzerland that it won 16-6. No. 157: A wonderful scene from the basketball game between the Philippines and Mexico, which the former won 32 to 30. No. 161: Germany provided the “Olympic” sailboats at the Berlin Olympic Games for all the nations participating in the sailing events. They are one-man sailboats that were quickly produced in Germany and were given positive reviews in all countries. No. 163: Shown here is the victorious German pentathlon team that competed in Bucharest. They are (from left): First Lieutenant Birk, First Lieutenant Handrick, Captain Heigl, Lieutenant Püttmann, Lieutenant Cramer, Lieutenant Lemp and Lieutenant Schreiber. No. 170: 27 Nations have representatives in the 100-kilometer street competition for bicyclists. The race started on the “Avus” track and ended on the same track after the riders returned through the North Gate. No. 187: The final sport on the last day of games in the Olympic Stadium is the equestrian jump competition, the so-called “Prize of the Nations”. No. 198: The names of the Olympic gold medalists [here: Jesse Owens!] were engraved in stone on either side of the marathon gate of the Olympic Stadium and then filled with lead.
