Ariel is my niece’s favorite Disney “princess,” and when I acquired this doll among a Barbie lot, I gave her the opportunity to adopt her from me. She declined because she is creeped out by dolls that talk or sing. She’s probably not alone in that, but I was actually delighted when I replaced Ariel’s battery, pushed the scallop shell on her chest and she belted out a snippet of Jodi Benson singing “Part of Your World.” The new battery is included and the recording is nice and clear. To add to the joy was the discovery of both the 2-piece fin skirt and lavender scallop shell bra original to the doll in my bin of yet-to-be-used Barbie clothing. Well, I couldn’t stop there, adding an aquatic plant wrap with matching hair accessory, a sand dollar “purse,” a silver chain belt with a translucent scallop shell and pearl dangle, an orange pet sea anemone on a leash with its own scallop shell to sit on, and of course, what modern mermaid would be complete without a cellphone bearing her own image. None in my world. All of my “rescues” get a spa day before being reimagined, so everything comes to you fresh and clean and ready for a new situation from a non-smoking, Barbie-and-her-friends-loving home.
