ABC News commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a special telecast, “FDR,” airing Friday, January 29 (9:00-11:00 p.m., EST), on the ABC Television Network. The program explores FDR’s profound impact on American political life and on the scope and power of the United States government, here and abroad. “FDR” marks the first time four United States Presidents are interviewed in a single program. President Reagan and former Presidents Carter, Ford and Nixon are interviewed by host David Brinkley. ABC News correspondents joining Brinkley include Peter Jennings, James Wooten, Richard Threlkeld and Robert Trout (who coined the phrase, “Fireside Chat”). Three of the world’s foremost experts on FDR-Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., James MacGregor Burns and Robert Dallek-are major contributors to the broadcast which traces the fascinating and powerful legacy of America’s 32nd President, pictured here (top row, left t right) in 1917 at his desk while serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the Wilson Administration; in 1920 at Hyde Park, New York, accepting the Vice President nomination on the James Cox ticket; in 1924 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, FDR submits the name of Al Smith as Presidential nominee at the Democratic convention; (bottom row, left to right) FDR, in 1931 the governor of New York, and former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith meet at a Democratic Party luncheon on Long Island; in 1932 a begrimed, well-wishing miner shakes hands with FDR as the Democratic Presidential nominee campaigns in West Virginia; and in 1933, the newly-elected President greets well-wishers in Warm Springs, Georgia, while waiting for the first lady to finish a speech to the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs there.Photo measures 10 x 8inches.
