Four-door sedan models for LeMans and Grand LeMans (top photo) have a new formal roof design in 1981. All intermediate coupes, sedans and two-seat station wagons (Grand LeMans Safari, bottom photo) have a lower, more horizontal front end appearance with a new grille and front fascia panel featuring new quad rectangular headlamps. New traditional wide tail lamps, with a chrome grid design, are standard on all coupes and sedans. The 3.8-liter (231 c.i.d.) V-6 two-barrel engine and a three-speed manual transmission are standard on coupes and sedans (automatic required in California) while the same engine with an automatic transmission is standard on station wagons. Available engines include the 4.3-liter (265 c.i.d.) V-8 for all LeMans and Grand LeMans models and the 4.9-liter (301 c.i.d.) an additional engine option for wagons. LeMans engineering improvements include front and rear shock absorbers with new single lip seals and Pliacell bags that help reduce friction and improve control; revised steering linkage, and new tire designs with increased tire pressures that help to improve fuel economy. New standard features for all LeMans models include power steering, a side-lift frame jack, a new compact spare wheel and tire, the new Freedom II battery and the General Motors Computer Command Control system.Photo measures 8 x 10.25inches.
