Original 1863 $100 Confederate Bond issued under the Act of February 20, 1863 in Richmond, Virginia. The engraved bond was printed by “Evans & Cogswell, Columbia, S. C.” and has the vignette of Alexander H. Stephens. It is hand numbered “18695” and was hand signed by Robert Tyler. Robert Tyler (1816-1877), the Registry of the Treasury, was a son of U.S. President John Tyler by his first wife. Tyler was head of the Democratic Party in Pennsylvania and a personal friend of President James Buchanan before he had to flee to the Confederacy. Through his father’s influence, he procured the post of Register of the Confederate Treasury, which he held from August 13, 1861 to the end of the war. After the war Tyler moved with his family to Alabama, where he became a newspaper editor. He also became the head of the Democratic Party in Alabama. There were 29,996 of this type Bond issued. Plain back There are three coupons left at the bottom. These were also hand signed and numbered. The $4 coupons were payable monthly and would have been cut off and redeemed at the Treasury. The Bond will come in an archival sleeve. It measures 11 1/2” x 15”. There are some stamp hinge repairs to the back in a few spots. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased.
