1784 Antique Print; Christs Hospital & Church, Newgate Street London after Grose

On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print “Christ’s Hospital, London Pl.2.” DATE PRINTED : 1787 from an engraving made in 1784, dated on the print. SIZE : The printed area including titles is approximately 15.5 x 11.5 cm (6 x 4.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER : Engraved by James Record (active c.1768-1790) from a study by Francis Grose. PROVENANCE : This print was published in an 1787 edition of “The Antiquities of England and Wales”, by Francis Grose. Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. TYPE : Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO : There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank. CONDITION : Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Christ’s Hospital was established as a school in November 1552 at the instigation of King Edward VI. The king’s patronage of the school was confirmed by a Royal Charter granted on 26 June 1553, eleven days before his death. The school was founded at Newgate Street, London, on the site of a Grey Friars (Franciscan) friary, with a preparatory school in Hertford, Hertfordshire which had supplementary schools at Ware and Broxbourne. A second major rebuilding took place from 1793 to 1836, including a Grammar School completed in 1793, a new Great Hall in 1829, Grammar and Mathematical Schools in 1834 and the cloisters known as the Grecians Cloister in 1836. In 1902 the Newgate Street and Hertford schools relocated to the present location south of Horsham in West Sussex and the General Post Office was built over most of the site.
